Top 10 Vegetables

There are no bad vegetables, but there are some that are pretty lame. Unfortunately, the lame ones tend to be the ones we eat the most.

Your average fast-food salad entombed in its plastic casket, for example, usually consists of a wad of iceberg lettuce, a couple slices of cucumber, a bloodless tomato, and maybe a dusting of carrot shavings. They aren’t worthless, but you can do a lot better.

Fortunately, supermarkets stock plenty of options. Here are the top 10 vegetables in descending order from best to not-so-best:

  • Collard Greens
  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Swiss Chard
  • Red Peppers
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Pumpkin
  • Carrots
  • Broccoli
  • Okra

Top 10 Fruits

Despite its reputation for having impressive medical powers, the apple, you may be surprised to learn, is nowhere near the top of the list. In fact, it doesn’t even make the top 25.

Here are the top 10 fruits:

  • Papayas
  • Cantaloupe
  • Strawberries
  • Oranges
  • Tangerines
  • Kiwifruit
  • Mangoes
  • Apricots
  • Persimmons
  • Watermelons

Top 10 Beans

Full of fibre and protein and very low in fat, the bean, nonetheless may be the least appreciated food. It’s a shame because they are so healthful. I think the reasons people don’t eat them are: Number one, they think of them as poor people’s food; number two, they’re worried about gas; and number three, they don’t know what to do with them.

Here are the top ten beans:

  • Soybeans
  • Pinto Beans
  • Chick-peas
  • Lentils
  • Cranberry Beans
  • Black-eyed Peas
  • Pink Beans
  • Navy Beans
  • Black Beans
  • Small White Beans

Incidentally, kidney beans, lima beans, and split peas are all really good for you too.

Top Ten Grains

We are supposed to be eating more grains than anything else. Unfortunately, a lot of the grain we eat have had most of their nutrients processed right out of them. Any time you can eat whole grains, you’re better off.

Here are the top 10 grains:

  • Quinoa
  • Whole-wheat Macaroni or Spaghetti
  • Amaranth
  • Buckwheat Groats
  • Spinach Spaghetti
  • Bulgur Wheat
  • Pearled Barley
  • Wild Rice
  • Millet
  • Brown Rice

Great list, I agree w/ everything although you totally snubbed muesli, it’s got complex carbs and essential fats as well as protein, a true perfect breakfast food too.

  2. Richard says:

You’ve got a solid list for people to just pick one in each category and make themselves an awesome meal. It amazes me how often I find people don’t know how to use the top 4 vegetables on your list. All they need to do is get some Ghee or butter, some chopped garlic, and sautee with collard greens / spinach / kale / swiss chard for an incrediblely tasty side dish!

    Cheers,
    Richard

I must say this is a great list of those food items out of which one include at least two things daily in their diet. It’s also important to have essentials fats in moderation and some condiments/spices to make the perfect meal. One can have these foods in various forms( fruits can be taken in salads, deserts : veggies in soups, salads , Grains : porridge, breakfast meals, Beans: salads, snacks etc) depending upon their preferences.
